Your tear film protects your eyes

Every time you blink, a tear film spreads across your eyes to keep them comfortable and protected. Meibomian glands, located in the eyelids, de bum, a natural oil that forms the lipid layer of the tear film. This lipid layer helps reduce tear evaporation and keeps the tear film stable.

How do your eyes become dry?

When the tear film evaporates too quickly, the eye becomes exposed, causing dryness. The eye may then react by producing more watery tears to protect itself. This is why, surprisingly, watery eyes can also be a sign of Dry Eye.

What affects your Meibomian glands?

Meibomian gland function can be affected by:

  • reduced or incomplete blinking
  • prolonged screen use
  • aging
  • hormonal changes
  • certain environmental factors

Over time, less meibum is released, making the lipid layer thinner. The watery layer then evaporates too quickly, making the tear film unstable.
